Sometimes my car won't go into 5th gear. But I put it in tiptronic and it thinks it's in 5th gear then I down shift to 4th and it's still in 4th, but now displays that it's in fourth. Then I use manual mode for a few seconds and get back on the high way and now when I put it into drive it goes into 5th gear. If I don't use manual mode it stays in 4th gear forever, more or less.

Is this an electrical issue? If so, is it an electrical issue inside the transmission, where I can't somewhat easily get to it or is it an electrical issue outside of the transmission or on the exterior of the transmission. Or is the problem something else? High or low ATF fluid or wrong fluid, maybe?

How many miles on the car? When was the last time the fluid was changed?
I'd start by checking the trans fluid level and pulling codes from the TCU.
