I took my car in to check noise in first gear. Mechanic calls today and says that they are ordering parts to replace my 1st gear...I would think the transmission would last more than about 40K miles....Anyone else with similar problems??

Well I haven't had a problem with 1st gear (yet!). Although I have a very interesting problem with 2nd gear. When shifting into second my transmission has a double notch. If shifted into the 1st notch it feels like its in gear but will pop out as soon as the clutch is let out. I learned this early on. The other problem is that when you do completely shift into second, the stick jumps (pops) back towards neutral as soon as the clutch is let out. It's almost as if you have shifted past second gear and letting the clutch out properly positions the gear.

I had taken my car in twice about this problem. The first time I was told that "it's just like all the rest of the cars" and not to worry about it. The second time, I took a tech for a test drive and he notice it. He thought it was the linkage and tried to adjust it. After some time adjusting the linkage, he called the hotline and was told it may be a bent or broken shift rod. I have an appointment to bring it in and I have talked to the service manager, although at this point it is still unclear as to what will be done.
