Can anyone briefly explain the part number on an A4 1.8t ECU? For example the last four characters of my ECU is "557P." Can I buy a used ECU with a different ending letter, i.e. "557S." Also, is an ECU transmission specific...I have a 1998.5 tip and the used spare ECU is from a 1998 manual. Thanks in advance. Jonathan

Here's how it works on Passat (same ECU)
P and M are interchangeable. N ECU must be replaced by another N, and can not be substituted for M or P.
Also keep in mind that you can not substitute drive by wire throttle ECU for any of the mentioned above.
The quattro/FWD, and Tip/Manual are reprogrammable in any ECU. The chip tuner will be able to do it.
