With speaker adapters made by MB Quart for the A4, you can fit 5.25" components in the front and have an easier time fitting 6.5" coaxials in the rear deck. You can use the MB Quart adapters with just about any brand of speaker. Good luck.

If the local dealer does not have the adapters in stock, ask them to order it.
As far as the depth is concerned: unfortunately I don't know. So far I have replaced the rear speakers, and from what I can see, it looks like you wouldn't have a depth restriction at all for the rear deck.
Again, I'm not sure about the fronts, but I thought someone on this board had to modify the panel a bit to fit some components with very large and deep magnets. It seems that most speakers fit; I wish I could be more specific. If you want to play it safe, you might want to consider these. They are really shallow and light, and the guys on the sounddomain.com forum have pretty favorable opinions on them:

DEI Studio Components
