Speed Limiter........Myth?

I have a 98 a4 2.8 quattro, and various sources as well as the owners manual said that the car is limited to 130 mph, however, i recently have achieved an indicated 137 mph im my vehicle.........is the limiter broken or......?

wikipedia claimed that the b5 2.8 30v can hit 149, but thats the only place i've seen that number, however, it's probably correct.

Can't answer your question for current cars, but I can tell you that the U.S. passed a law that all automobiles sold here must be electronicly limited to 130 mph in '84-85 (?) The Germans complied with this law for many years, while the Japs blatantly ignored it.
Hopefully the Germans have begun to ignore it also....

I've bumped up against the limiter in mine. Not sure exactly how fast I was going, but it was between 125 and 130. It's possible that you may have been able to go faster. I recall hearing about the limiter in the RS6's being set based on the tires being both bald and underinflated, meaning that with well maintained tires you could actually go faster than the limiter would allow. Sneaky.

I live in xcanada and bought my a4 (2.8 96) from the states a few years back with water damage. I have reached 255 (158mph) clicks once without much of a problem. Only modifications to it would be newer, bigger airbox, low profile klassen tires, and thats about it. So no idea how you guys have limiters...
