99.5 2.8QMS- Pilot Alpin Snows-225/50/16= Great in Ohio.
Mostly rain/slush or dry here but we do get serious snow now and then and these tires have yet to fail me. 2am on a weeknight and 6" of fresh snow on the ground? I'm up and getting dressed to go for a drive :-)

My experience
A4 Avant replaced a '90 Coupe Quattro. I'm located in Steelertown area (lots of hill and occassionally big snows).
Biggest thing I noticed between old Coupe and A4 is the 1" lower ground clearance- definitely a dertriment pulling thru heavy snow (Coupe pulled uphill thru approx. 13" of unplowed snow; don't get the feeling the A4 would do the same).
If you're serious about snow, get a set of 15" wheels, throw on 195/65 pure snow tires (Nokian or Gislaved, in my experience). Forget about any sports car-like driving till winter is over and you put your summer tires back on.

Just got back from skiing and....
drove back to Denver over the continental divide. I had LM-22s put on a couple weeks ago. On the way past Arapahoe Basin I heard a parking lot full of fresh stuff calling my name. There was probably a foot or a little more. Took a few turns in the lot and looked at my tracks. My 99.5 has got the sport option and I was cutting off the top of the snow I was driving over. Clearance is definitly an issue, but I don't really think I'll come across much deeper than a foot or so. By the way, very good in the snow, even uphill in a bumpy, dirt, snow-covered lot. As if you needed me to tell you that.....

D60 snow performance
I had Dunlop D60-A4s on a previous non-Audi car. they were pretty good in snow when new, but the next year, they were terrible. I don't know how I could get a FWD car to drastically oversteer around very slow speed corners, but they did. If you are going with all-season only for replacements, I would recommend a better tire.
