Default Squeaky brakes anyone???

I have a 2002 A4 1.8T, 22K and my brakes sound awful! The dealer told me that it is normal (obviously did not want to replace them) for them to squeak, but it has become very imbarassing. Has anyone else had this problem? Suggestions?

Default Mine actually started about 2 wks ago....37k mi

I can only hear them when drving very slowly, or when coming to a stop. Once applied they don't squeak. Have to admit I have been to busy to take a close look at them. Anyone, go through pads that quickly???

Can I change them myself, I just moved to CA, so I don't have many tools at my disposal.

Default Re: Squeaky brakes anyone???

I had a problem with the brakes squeaking and replaced all the discs and pads and found the fault putting the caliper back on the car.

Mine ended up being the slider that is connected on the caliper was sticking and not releasing the caliper, causing the pad to rub on the disc when no pressure was on the pedal, if I pressed the brake the noise stopped.

Mine only squeaked when I turned left, was o.k on turning right. Check the sliders could be the same.

Default Dealer will say it's normal, here's why ...

Basically brake squeal is a result of vibration between the caliper and the rotor under mild, not hard, braking pressure. It doesn't mean brakes are faulty or not working, and is purely a cosmetic annoyance. The fact that our brake pads are grippier than most OEM pads also means they will squeak more than most OEM cars out there.

I, too, wish it weren't so...

Sounds silly, but that's what it is, and our pads are very good at vibrating :-)<ul><li><a href="http://www.advantagebmw.com/Audi/advantage_audi_tips_care.htm">Article on brake noise</a></li></ul>

Default I just fixed my squeak this weekend...

My squeaking was from the metal backing on the pads vibrating against the caliper...I used that brake squeal stopper goo that permatex makes (basically forms like a plastic barrier between metal-metal contact)..I used it on the fronts only and it got rid of like 90% of it..I'm doing the rears next weekend which should get rid of it all. I'm running porterfield pads FYI.
