Starting problems

Now that the weather is changing and getting warmer, I've been having a little bit of a problem starting my car some days. It seems on the really cool morning my car sometimes has problems on the initial startup. When it fires up it only goes up to maybe 400-500 RPMs and putters for a while and then either cuts off or starts up just fine. If the engine stops then the second start attempt almost always cranks up just fine.
I talked to one of my mechanics and he said that some thign like that could be a build up of carbon causing erratic startups, or it could be an engine temp sensor that he has seen some slightly off readings on cooler days causing strange startups. Does anyone have any ideas on what could cause this? Do any of the ideas that my mechanic has sound valid?

Sounds kind of like a leaking fuel injector. After you turn the car off some fuel may leak out of the tip of the injector into the cylinder. So when you go to start up, the cylinder is basically flooded and has a hard time starting/running until the excess fuel is burned off.
Also, the build up of carbon on the valves or cylinder is a valid theory. What can happen is if there is too much carbon build up it can act like a "sponge" and soak up excess fuel. When you go to start it, it has to burn off that excess fuel before it'll run smoothly.
I really don't know about the temp sensor - your mechanic probably knows more than me.
Obviously the only way to find out what's really wrong is to have it diagnosed properly with a VAG & testing. Either you can DIY or have your mechanic do it.
Hope this helps.
