Default steam kinda shooting from ATF filler plug hole during filling

1998 2.8Qtip

pulled tranny oil pan, changed filter, filled the pan till it flowed out the fill hole, tranny temp at 12c, still pumping so it overflows, black oil starts overflowing, then steam starts puffing out the fill hole, kept the flow going then it changed to clear, lots of splashing and loud gargling sounds coming from the pan, while cycling through the gears i couldnt get the fluid in fast enough and i hit 48c before i could finish the gears and get enough fluid in, so i put the plug in and im going to top it up later before i drive it

so thats the story. my question is about the steam and black oil?

Default You really should monitor ATF with a VAG-COM during ATF filling with car raised and level....

Then:

1. Start engine with a cold tranny and open the fill plug when ATF temp rises to 35 degrees Celcius (at which time all ATF will be pumped into the torque converted and valve body--no significant fluid will escape).

2. Observe that ATF exits the fill hole somewhere between 35 and 40 degrees Celcius.

3. If not, pump ATF into the tranny until it overflows and retest when ATF cools down.

4. When done, replace the fill plug o-ring and torque to 80 Nm.

Default almost sounds like the tranny wasnt getting any fluid, hence the steam.

did you make sure the filter was fastened correctly? When I changed mine, I had to really push that filter on. Maybe the filter isnt secured which is causing the tranny to not get an fluid??? Just a thought.

Default i had the process down, vag, 4 car ramps, i just couldnt keep up with the ..........

fluid demand when shifting through gears, but by this point it was near 43c and no steam, actually, now that i think of it the sloshing and steam stopped when it hit around 30c and at that point really started sucking it up, it only produced the steam and gargled when it was cold (12c to 30c)

does this sound normal?

Default yup, i made sure the filter seated perfect, it has raised metal tabs on the filter mounts that i....

made flush with the plastic filter brackets, the screws did not apply any pulling force to the filter at all.

so do you think i just couldnt pull fluid up for that 12c to 30c period because of a air pocket or something? i dont like the sounds of steam as a result of no fluid

do you know what systems inside the tranny this could effect other than the pump? just trying to figure out if something bad happend

Default After you mounted the pan, did you do the initial fill with the motor off?

If not, there wasnt any fluid in the pan for it to suck up.

Default YGM

I emailed you a pdf of a write up I did when I changed my fluid. You can compare it you did anything different. The procedure I sent you must be performed exactly or the fluid level will not be correct.

Default oh i made sure it was overflowing before i started it, but what surprised me was...

when i started it up and with my continuous overflow, black fluid began pouring out, not fresh stuff

the black fluid overflowing and the steam came together, when clear stuff began to overflow the steam went away and the sloshing stopped soon after
