My car which is a '97 A4 2.8Q was making some new noises and it turns out that my power steering fluid was leaking. I took it to my mechanic to find out the source of the leak, and it's coming from both the steering column itself and from the hoses too, with the larger leak from the steering column. I was quoted approximately $1200 for the steering column plus another $500 for the hoses and alignment.

This mechanic has done repairs for me in the past and has been reasonable, but I was a little taken aback by the price this time, so I was wondering what others have paid to have their steering rack replaced and if you've had hoses replaced as well for the steering rack, how much those ran.

The rack should run approx $500 - $700 depending on where you buy it. The hose can be expensive too approx $200 for the HP hose. Labor seems to run approx $500. Hope this helps.
