I have a 98.5 1.8t with non-power, non-heated gray cloth seats. My 18-month old daughter is determined to destroy my cloth seats, so I've decided to upgrade to black leather. I am not exactly sure how hard this upgrade will be, but I know that I will need to change the F&R seats, door inserts, and the armrest cover to look remotely stock when finished. I plan to visit Shokan.com to pick up all necessary parts... what else will I need? Also, to those who have done it- any advice? I have STF and found no details of the changeover.
1. Are the door inserts a bolt-off/bolt-on application, or will I require apolstering tools/experience?
2. What year/trim A4 seats will work cleanly on my 98.5?
3. If power/heated seats are installed, are they a biatch to hook up, or should I stay away?
TIA!

I upgraded my regular cloth to sport leather. But the leather was from the same year and same model (2.8). Basically pnp.
I would skip on the door inserts, it does not look out of place after I put in my leather seats.
You also need to figure out if the new seat cover is compatible with the side impact airbag currently in your seats. You don't want those things fail when you need them.
skip power/heated seats - if you search the archinve you will see a lot of my posts telling people what's involved to do so. It's not worth it.

and see how much it would cost to have them upholstered in leather? thats what im thinking about doing down the road, but thats also because i love the heated non-power larger-side bolster (recaro?) 97 sport seats.

build up what you want beginning at the 'Price your interior" link on the opening page.
Mine are two tone centers with perforatted leather. I did mine quite a while back ... it was ~685 for the interior IIRC.
