I'm experiencing stiff/heavy steering when I go around tight corners (semi-fast)...Would this be a power steering issue or an AWD issue? As far as i can tell steering is fine in all other cases :\
(stiff/heavy means I have to use two hands with moderate effort to turn the wheel)

yep to both directions..
I tested the car while doing circles in a parking lot, and it appears that it consistently becomes stiff right at the 1.5k RPM mark. But if i go the same speed or faster in 2nd gear lets say, it won't do it. Also, I tried to push the clutch in when it did become stiff, and it did not have any affect.

The belt is a serpentine design that in addition to driving the steering pump, also drives the alternator and air conditioning compressor. Should the belt 'slip', it will certainly make you aware!

No to the other type of steering fluid..and i'm not sure about when its cold, because it hasn't gotten too cold here yet.
But I would say that steering causes a whine when turning..

with regard to my problem/symptoms, I finally took the car to the mechanic, and he says its the power steering pump, and that it needs to be replaced. I'll update this thread after hes finished replacing the pump.
