Default Strange problem with engine temp gauge

Hi,

I have a 2001.5 1.8T. Lately I've been seeing some odd behavior from my engine temperature gauge. When I commute to and from work (~40min), I can actually see the needle of the temp gauge move from the 12 o'clock position all the way down to the "C" position. This happens once or twice whenever I drive anywhere, despite the fact that the engine's fully warmed up. Could this simply be a bad engine temp gauge (the oil temp gauge reading is ok), or can it be a sign of some gross problem with my cooling system? Any inputs/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Default Not sure about the audi's but....

in allot of cars the temp is run off of a vacumm tube and when it comes loose the vacumm is inconsistant and leaky causing the jumping around of the guage.

It happended to me once in a jeep and I just had to plug it back in.

Default if you are referring to your coolant temp gauge, it may be bad thermostat....

Do you have any problems with getting heat in the car? Does the coolant gauge drop when you crank up the heat? Does the coolant gauge drop when you're driving steadily at highway speeds on cold days, but is back up when you're driving in the city? Usual symptoms of bad thermostat.

Default Bad sensor. I had the same problem, they replaced it under warranty. No problem since then.

There was no rhyme or reason to my temp gauge malfunctioning; sometimes it would be working, and sometimes it wouldn't. It was on again/off again all the time, without any apparent cause. If that's what you're experiencing it should be an easy fix.

ditto! ditto! ditto! (Except on mine, the replacement was bad leading to a rupture. Fun stuff).
