When I bought my A4 the previous owner had put in an ABT stress bar. Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is the stress bar for?

its probably an upper stress bar, supports the chassis between the upper shock towers. goes in the battery tray area, wiper motor, brake cyl... IMO, the bottom of the chassis needs stiffening, not the top, again, IMO. {zipping up flame suit}
