Stuck Thermostat?

I believe I might be having a faulty thermostat issue with my 96 A4 (about 110k), but wanted to run it by some folks. While driving into work today, the climate system started continuously pushing out hot air ... even with the setting turned down to 63 degrees. The coolant temperature was running low ... just above the 60 mark on the gauge. Ambient temperature outside was about 40 degrees. I'm guessing that the thermostat might be stuck open.
Besides the discomfort of the warm cabin temp ... how quickly do I need repair it? I don't want to be causing immediate or further damage.
Hopefully there's a simple explanation and sorry if it's been covered before!

Blowing hot air = cooling down engine. Turn the heat off completely and see it car will warm up to normal, if not, thermostat is stuck open too. Also scan it for codes.

Thanks. This might be. A few miles before getting to work, I shut off the Climate Control by turning the fan down completely. The engine temperature did rise slightly, but then I arrived at my destination.

I quickly tried the Climate Control codes and it's registering 8.7 "Temperature Regulator Flap, sporadic block". Sounds mechanical ...
