Stumped on How To Get Fresh Air?

I give up! I've read the manual and tried playing around with climate control settings/buttons. I cannot figure out how to pull in fresh air through the vents. My understanding is the "Econ" setting does it, but it seems to be tied to the temp setting. I'm missing my old British sports cars that had huge vents in front of the windshield that opened via a lever inder the dash.

pressing ECON turns the a/c compressor OFF
making sure recirculation is OFF means the outside vents are open
the temperature settings are ALWAYS in effect because just because you are in ECON mode, doesn't mean the car still won't produce HEAT.

keeps you from falling asleep, so believe it or not.. you car Always gives you fresh air... unless the Recirc button is pressed.. sometimes is chilled or heated, and its always filtered - but its from outside.
if you don't believe me.. try finding a time when pushing the recirc button actually doesn't cause a change in the way the a/c behaves.
