Default stupid question... what does b5 stand for?

i know that a b5 is a 96-01 a4, s4 or avant, but what does b5 stand for?

So the A4 platform designation is the 4th gen Golf/Jetta.

Default Ironically, the A3 is on the A4 and A5 platform. The A4 is on the B6, the A6 on the C6...

Yes, it's confusing.
