It sucks having American muscle lovers as friends...

Two red 68's and a white 69 in excellent condition. As a pony car the 80's Mustang is excellent, but egads are they unpretty.

the '80s Mustangs. The SVO in particular (since I have one!) But I'm not a fan of the '87 - '93 GT package... aerodynamic add-ons that slowed the car down! (The LX had a higher top speed due to less drag.)
I had several '69 and '70 Mach 1s and loved them. Love the styling of the early Mustangs (not so much a fan of the '71-73 body style, and definitely not too high on the '74-78 Mustangs.)
But StangGuy is right... back then they were great. Today, my slightly older backside prefers a comfortable A4 to a harsh riding SVO or loud & obnoxious 1970 Mach 1 for a daily ride.
But then again, that's why we keep the Mustangs around for the weekend, right? ;-)

Why does it have to be one or the other? Most import guys really have to act like snobs to make up for the low hp of their cars. Sure, American sports cars aren't as refined but they offer a completely different experience.
I think most of the arguments are frivilous, commenting on aesthetics and stigmas. Are all Audi drivers homosexual? No. Do all american car owners have bad haircuts? No.
American sports cars with real power will always be sought after by the true enthusiast. A honda civic will not be a classic wheras the vettes and camaros and similar already are. You cannot approach one type of car with the attitude befitting of another. I don't jump in my SS and pretend it's as civil as that old 190 Benz I drove around in or as desireable as a Ferrari. It is what it is and I love it for that reason. I enjoy my Audi for entirely different reasons.
Can't we all just get along?

both have their own niche in the automotive market.
But with my $, I won't buy anything domestic. I hope that things change within the industry...but right now...my money is going to Germany or Japan.
