swap of ecu's

I am going to buy a new ecu with a chip and it was in a 5speed car and mine is auto. His was a 98 1.8tqs and mine is a 97 1.8tqa. I have the vag tool. How do I change the ecu around, or do I need to change it? thanks

read how yours is coded and then code the new ECU to what yours was.

taken from archives...

You just go to the engine module and there will be a "recode" button. When you get to that page you will see 2 spots, one is for the dealer code and the other is to recode the soft code. Just enter the code from the stock ecu into the new ecu and press enter
