Default Cheese graters have a raised lip on each hole to catch the surface to shred...

Cross drilled rotors do not have this raised lip over each hole, and have a smooth surface which makes them less likely to have the same effect.

Default The phrase was not meant to be taken literally.

Even "flat holes" will create an extra edge making contact with the pad. That will increase wear on the pad, which is why the term cheesegrater is used.

True, cross-drilled rotors kill brake pads at the track. ok for street.
