Default Tank On Empty.com: How far can you go after the gas light in your car has gone on?

Personally, this seems like a bad thing to do to your car. I've read numerous times that driving until you run out of fuel is very hard on the fuel pump.

A6 at #3, A4 at #13

I've found that it's roughly a 2 gallon warning in our cars. How far depends on several things

Nate, your right. Running the gas tank down that low is a quick way to buying a new fuel pump and sometimes a regulator along with it. There is usually a fair bit of setiment at the bottom of the tanks which usually gets ingested into the pump. Pumps need the liquid to keep them cool. My neighbor just fried the pump on his acura last summer that way. We never let the tanks get below a quarter mark on any of our cars.

Default When I was changing my fuel pump, I could see dirt particles at the bottom

but the WTF could I do to get them out? Use a fish tank cleaner? I just won't run my tank down to the last liter.

and the pre-screen on the pump itself. That's what I was thinking.
