is it possible that because of a bad tensioner the motor would make a knocking sound? one person told me they thought i needed new bearings because of possible a clogged oil pickup because the car had a low oil light on for a while. another told me i need a whole new motor. but i brought it to a shop and the mechanic thinks the tensioner for the timing belt is causing the problem. is that possible?
i know for the b5 s4 you need to change your timing belt every 70k or so miles is this roughly the same with the 1.8t a4? by the way the car is a 2000 atw motor.

The tensioner if it is bad could make a noise i suppose... or it could have slipped timing and it's your valves hitting the pistons......... does it run well?
You need to have the motor checked asap, stop driving it.
And yes, 60-80K max on the TB/WP and related.

valves and pistons met. that's bad. just replacing the belt won't be enough...
couple that with "low oil...for awhile"... you're probably looking at an entire rebuild to truly get it right
sorry man.
this is worst-case scenario, mind you. If the stars aligned properly, infant baby jebus came down and blessed you himself, and paris hilton has started a "granny-panties" fad... well, you might have a chance.

...because he took the motor apart. i need a new timing belt, chain tensioner, water pump, valve cover gasket kit, oil pan gasket, crank and cam seals, spark plugs, oil and oil filter. i was quoted a little less than 600 for all that and to put it all in the mechanic said it would be 16.5 hours at 60 an hour which will come to 990 for the labor and 1590 total does that sound right? or does it sound like too much money for that work and parts.
also whats a good place to buy those parts for cheaper.
