Terrible grinding noise at start

Terrible grinding noise at start
I've been off on a business trip for about week and a half and my car has been sitting in the garage. When I started it for the first time this morning, there was a terrible grinding noise as the engine caught which went away in about a half second. Any ideas what it might have been? The car has 1,250 miles on it.
