Default I'm really not interested on opinions on when to change my oil. When I drained it out...

it was the dirtiest oil I''ve seen in my engines. I think that 5K changes for a turbo with dino oil is really pushing it. I am not burning any oil and really don't believe all that crap about break in oil and I am generally skeptical about a lot of web info. It's definitely in Audi's best interest to go with the longer oil changes and leaving in the old oil filter every other change. I think the turbo really quickly ages any oil except for synthetic. Think about this and the fact that our 1.8T's only have 3.7 qts. of oil to work with. That's so little oil to carry all that dirt and acid after 3K miles. Each to there own I guess. Happy driving .

Default Not sure if oil filter can be reached with shield on; I didn't change filter but I was thinking of

just moving the coolant tank over and reach the filter from above. I tried this and it seems easy to me. Only 3 easy screws to get off the tank. I didn't actually remove the filter but I could easily reach it with the tank removed. I guess I'm spoiled since I owned a BMW which had the oil filter right on top. I also have a suction device that I could remove the oil from the dip stick tube. It worked great and I never had to get under the car for oil changes.

Question...on those service intervals where the filter is not paid for by Audi will they put one on if I pay for it?

Default Talk to a petroleum engineer and you will find out that oil turns black due to being exposed to oxygen, or horrible piston ring blowby!

Default Draining the oil through the dipstick tube is not a great idea (more)

You miss a lot of the crud that settles to the bottom of the pan. The best way to ensure all the particulates go out with the old oil is to drain from the bottom and leave the plug out until it quits dripping. Shops _never_ do this due to time constraints. If you are paranoid you can add a new quart of inexpensive oil while the plug is out and this will help flush the bottom of the pan.
