Default Is there any real way to check for engine sludge?

I'm thinking that unbolting the oil pan and having a look is about the only way to be for sure.

You need to drop the subframe to drop the oil pan which also means getting a alignment because of moving the subframe. I wouldn't sugest it.

Default If you're THAT paranoid about it...just run some engine flush through

Drain a quart of oil out, add a quart of aggressive engine flush, let the engine idle for 15-20 mins, drain everything out and change oil/filter. If you use synthetic oil, it's almost certain that you have zero sludge.

Cheers,
