the 04 6 speed tranny out of the B6 1.8t? My sister just got the B6 with the ultra premium sport package and I loved the 6th gear....its in my opinion what all B5s need to cruise at 80 mph withough running the rr's up in 5th.

Default I asked this when the 6 speed 1.8T was announced...

The consensus was that it was not doable :-( Don't know how much truth there is to that.. I'm not enough of a gear head.

Default I'd bet it is a direct bolt in .. not sure about the shift mech tho. Given how 'new' the A4 6 speed

I'd wager it is far less expensive to do a S4 6 speed swap.

Default Actually......

It's most likely that the 6 speed in the '04 1.8T is identical to the B5 S4's. Differences from the 5 speed to the 6 speed are: center driveshaft, axle flanges, linkage, final drive, and mounts. With the B6 setup, you would only need the "DTS" style mount, rather than the two side trans mounts. Much simpler, IMO, but still very spendy. My '97 A4 2.0TQMS has an S4 6 speed driveline.

Default Doubtful. The B6 6-sp shifts much better than any B5 S4 tranny, and...

I recall reading somewhere that it's a new unit.

Default Re: Doubtful. The B6 6-sp shifts much better than any B5 S4 tranny, and...

Letter code FRE = 01E 6 speed, with a final drive of 4.375. Used in 3.0L B6's.

letter code GJW and GJV = 02X 6 speed, final drive of 4.11(GJW) and 3.889(GJV- e-code?), used with both 1.8T and 3.0L B6's.

letter code FVD = 0A3 6 speed, final drive 3.889. Used in B6 S4.

letter code EDU = 01E 6 speed, final drive 4.11, used in B5 S4's.

I stand corrected. ;-)

Default you can drop in the 2.8 5sp and the revs will drop 250-300 on the freeway...

and much cheaper than doing a 6sp conversion.

I'm having a 2.8 tranny (code DWM) swapped out as we "speak."

and adding the new AMS SS.

will now be a much better freeway cruiser.
