Is there anything bad about using a orbital polisher to apply wax - it is so much easier and faster

Provided you use the right foam pad, not at all!

Default I would have to say, as long as you use soft enough pad, and low enough speed

it should work well. Just remember to let the machine do the work, and use *very* light amount of pressure. No real risk of burning the paint.
