Is there a cheaper way to improve the suspension than coilovers? I hear you can't put a cup kit...

Default RE: Suspension...

Absolutely, you can find a spring/shock combination that fits your needs, unfortunately the only application for the 96-01 A4 H&R makes is for the FWD cars. I would suggest a set of bilstein's perhaps matched with a set of race springs.

Take care,

Default Well.

The H&R Cup Kit isn't available for 96-01 Quattro, but there are a number of other options available. Look into H&R sport springs with some Koni or Bilstein shocks. It's a great combination that many people are using.

Default I'll second the H&R sports and bilsteins!

It's a great "low cost" alternative to coilovers.

Default Same/better? I disagree.

I haven't tried everything out there to provide a definitive answer, but I had an Eibach and Bilstein kit on my A4 that I was really not happy with. I found the matched shock and spring on the coilovers was miles better, and well worth the money spent (I spent $30K on a nice car, I wasn't going to cheap out and stop with a suspension that handled worse than the neighbor's Honda Civic). Not all shock and spring sets are bad. In fact I'm quite fond of the H&R sports and Bilstein set up in the A4, but if the extra $500 wasn't going to kill me, I would still get coilovers.
