Default Thermostat problem

Hello,

I am not sure if my temperature gauge is malfunctioning or not. It will raise to 90C and then even after the car is warmed up it will drop below 90C and then back to 90C later. Quite a lot of fluctuation. Am I looking at a broken thermostat?

Thanks.

does it warm up at idle and then have difficulty remaining at operating temp at sustained speed?

It warmed up at idle fine and reached 90C no problem..Then if I turn the engine off to pick up a quick grocery and after I restart the car, it will have difficulty reaching 90C and then eventually it will drop below 90 and go back up and drop down again.

Any ideas?

Default i would guess that is the thermostat, is it still the original one? they will stick open

once they go so it is tough to keep constant temps.

Yes..it is still the original one.

Expensive to get it replaced? Any harm to keep driving around for a few weeks before getting the work done?

Default no it is easy to replace (at least it was on my 01) and it should be ok for a few weeks

they will drain some coolant, so it is good idea to get it all drained and new stuff with a new thermostat.

I would first change the temp sensor as they are easy to change and have a history of malfunctioning.
