Default Thinkin' 'bout an A4 for 2nd car/wifes car...

We're thinking the 1.8T with quattro. What kind of performance mods can I make to this car? I'll be driving this car too, especially when the weather turns bad, and I like to have a nice bit of power on tap. Thanks for any help, also, I'd like to see some pictures of some hooked up A4's.

Default just a $400 chip gives you ~50 HP

can't beat that.

Default a nice bit of power on tap....

Even with a chip, an A4 will not have the immediate power and torque delivery like your 330, but hey, you don't want your wife to beat ya, right?

Apart from just a chip, you can replace the whole turbo. Turbo lag will probably grow even worse (over stock), but once it spools up, then we're talking. Leave that 330 in the dust

Seriously though, the modding potential of the 1.8T A4 is only limited by the amount of money you're willing to spend. Search the archives for "performance mods". I'm sure tons of stuff will pop up. There aren't as many mods available for the new 2002 A4s yet, but it's just a question of time.

Some people spend their $$$ gambling. Others - modding their Audis. Both are addictive. Both will cost you dearly once you swallow the hook.

Default A week after I got mine, my wife had to have one, so we got her an A4

and she loves it. She no longer complains about her hour-long commute. She did just get a ticket for 90 in a 65 though. No mods for her, she already spends too much time above 100.

Default Thanks for the input thus far...

No, I really don't want the wife to beat me. That would really hurt my ego My 330ci is supposed to be delivered first week of my, right now I drive a '93 325 which has I think 189 HP, so would an A4 with that $400 chip be around the same in strait line performance? Not that big a deal anyway, neither she, nor I are racecar drivers. I just like to be able to hit a gap when I see one open up in traffic. Anyway, we're looking at an A4 a couple of years old. Any years that are better than others? Thanks again...

Default Well, the 2000 and earlier 1.8T's in stock form are slugs.

You'll find a few people who disagree with this statement, and a LOT that will agree with it. Add a tiptronic to the equation, and you have a snail. The 2001 models upped the horsepower by 20 (total 170), giving you a little more ooomph...just enough to get by in stock form I'd say, but still, a chip will bring more joy to your world (200-207 hp total, and about 250 ft-lbs or torque for highway passing!). A chipped A4 will outrun a stock 325 in highway acceleration.

If you're not interested in chipping your car, then consider the 2.8. Plenty of smooth silent power (as opposed to the 4 banger turbo). In 1998, they changed the engine from a 12 valve engine to the 30 valve engine. I would definitely say get the 30 valve...20 more horses (190 total).

Default My $.02 from my A4...

I'm thinking practically now. Since your're getting a 330, the A4 is going to be just as small. If you need to haul more than two people, you might consider getting a car with more rear seat room like an A6. My A4 is dinky in the back. We had to take my old 4000 on New Years day, because no one wanted to ride in the back of my A4. Just something to think about.

Default You already sound like a nicer person than I am...

I'm not to worried about the back seat space... folks in the back can either be cramped or walk The A4 would prob. be the grocery getter, as well as wife's car, not really a people hauler, there's busses and such for other folks

Default The only problem is that *I* have to sit back there sometimes. CRAMP!!!

I wouldn't get sport seats again either. That A4 is the hardest car to get out of. Just about as bad as my 944. A6 Avant (even w/ TIP) next time 'round for me!
