Also does anyone know if putting the 1.0 bar chip in decrease engine life or turbo life??? thanks

As you demand more boost from you turbo, it spools longer and harder creating more heat. 1.0 bar will run very hot. It will decrease both engine life and turbo life. You will most likely never notice the extra wear on the engine, but expect the turbo to have a little less life...instead of 200k think 140k (just a guessed number)<p>'98 1.8T QMS Silver

Yes the turbo will generate more heat. Whether that causes reliability problems or not depends on a couple factors.
A high quality synthetic engine oil will help because it is better at heat transfer and its break down occurs at higher temps so it continues to lube where non-synthetics might just bake on.
A habit of engine (turbo) cool down before shutting the engine off could make a huge difference. Once the A4 is shut off no coolant or oil flow. Both can be used to pull heat from the turbo before shutting the engine off by letting the engine idle a minute or 2. This cooldown is important for both the bearing and the impeller which can get extremely hot and eventually loose its tempered strength.
Synthetic and cooldown are also worthwhile practices with a stock chip, but the added heat stresses of the 1.0 bar chip reduces the margins between acceptable and catastrophic for the turbo.
As to whether it is harder on the engine or not. Well that is more related to driving style. If you use the extra power a lot then you could expect some increased engine wear but the general feeling is the 1.8T is a pretty bullet proof engine.<p>2001 A4 1.8TQMS
