It looks like a midrange but I have a suspicion its not a speaker at all. There are no markings indicating bose and no sound is produced when I hooked up another mid, Anybody know?

Close. It's the speaker for handsfree calling. I added the Parrot CK3100 built in bluetooth to my 99.5. Nice install. Pretty much plug and play in a B5. Just plugging it in to the exising wiring behind the radio, the sound comes out of the little speaker in the door.

Might someone direct me to a narrative regarding B5 door panel removal, so I can replace OEM speaker in-kind? Hint: mine are torn, so I need OEM speakers, if anyone saed their original speakers after replacement. Thanks!

Remove the two screws at the top of the door panel, one at each side. Remove a couple of screws under the handle. They're hidden, need to pry their cover and slide it up.
Then lift the whole panel up.
Google or check YouTube. Plenty of details with pictures/videos.
