Default For those of us that change our own oil...

Has anyone else seen signs of a coolant leak (dry pink spots) on their LOWER engine cover?
After removing the pan/cover for the second time (oil change), I noticed that there were a few spots (4-5) near the center on the inside of the cover AGAIN. Is this normal or should I have audi double-check my water pump?

Default I think you hit the nail on the head

Sounds like you need a water pump. Later on, start to look for power steering fluid. It's fairly common, at least on older models, for power steering fluid to leak from one of the hoses.

Default yep

My 99 a4 1.8t had it's water pump changed before
it hit 10k miles - a "whole batch" of 1.8t engines supposedly
went out with this problem (bad water pump).

I had posted this a couple months back... problem
is now I forget the range of effected cars... ;(

take it in, and check your pumps folks!

Default this is one reason why NOT removing your pan may be a good idea...

in addition to aerodynamics under the car, keeping water out of the sensitive electronics in the engine bay and keeping it cleaner, keeping the pan on can help point out issues like this.

Default So what happens when the mechanic doesn't check this?! (more)

This is the SECOND time that I am discovering this leak. During my first service I assumed that the mechanic would check this and seal off /fix the problem. Obviously he diddn't or did not notice; whatever. I have the skill the change my own oil and remove/replace the oil pan etc. The difference between the mechanic and I would be the mechanic rushing the job. Wouldn't want a broken water pump at 50k b/c i'll basicly be pulling $ out of my pocket. (Not "knocking" mechanics at all)
