Default For those of you who have actually been behind the instrument cluster and removed it. What do you

think about this idea?

There are a ton of very small 1.3 watt lights there that plug into small sockets. The lights in turn plug into large clear plastic stands that the actual faces sit on, I'm assumming to produce even distribution throughout the face. If I were to get 00-01 gauge face sheets, and replace the bulbs with LED lights (same basic wiring I'd assume) I could get the look of the newer A4's possibly, correct?

Default Not always true - how the light couples to the light piping (plastic) may be different

the LEDs will have a different radiation pattern.

Default If you have a 99.5

Then you just have red LEDs in place of the white LEDs in the 2000+ clusters.

The gauges faces are the same...clear.

Frankly, I love the red and I'd love to convert my 2000 car to red. Problem is, I'd have to unsolder the reds from the 99.5 cluster I have, unsolder the whites from my 2000, then resolder the reds into the 2000 cluster. And they're small and you'd have about 25 of them to do.

Now...converting from red to white is a challenge, but if converting from white to red, I'm thinking a gel cover MAY work. I haven't tried it yet, but I will.

There should be no bulbs in your 99.5 cluster. They should be red LEDs.

Default Why not just get a 2000+ cluster and replace yours?

That way you'd also get rid of that goofy analog clock Audi thought fit to put in the earlier cars.

Default If you have a spare cluster - esperimenting is the way to go.

Remember you need a resistor for the each LED.

Default If you have bulbs, are the bulbs red or clear?

If the bulbs are red or have red covers, you should be able to just remove the covers or replace the bulbs with clears.

I'd love to see pics of the 97 cluster with bulbs.
