Default Thoughts on a '99 Audi A4 1.8t Quattro or 2.8 Quattro

Hey, I am new here I frequent Bimmerforums.com since I have a 98 Z3 2.8. I have been directed over here by members on BF.c and have heard that this place has very helpful and knowledgable members, I hope to become an Audi owner just need information before I buy.

Some have said the 2.8 is more reliable than the 1.8t, would like your take on it. BTW this is for a daily driver and as of now I do not plan to mod it if I buy, but I still want something fun to tear around town in. Wish I had the cash for an S4 but most of my money is being saved for a BMW M Coupe.

I am looking at this Audi as a replacement for my aging and falling apart '95 Ford Explorer. http://www.autotrader.com/dealers/v...is=IVNLBDLNDS59

good price? any problems/concerns that would need to be looked at before purchase?

And if someone is generous enough to run a car-fax that would kick *** but it is not really that big of a deal.

Default i love my 99, but the 99.5 is a better find...

if you get the 1.8t and buy a chip, it will be as fast as the 2.8...maybe faster and more zippy. My reliability is ok...little things here and there, but then again I didn't want a honda and like working on my car.

Default "Not going to mod"

Famous last words ;-) If you do 1.8T, you can just do a $500 chip and get power.. but the 2.8 is more reliable, and has no turbo lag, and if you truly will never want to mod it, is definetly the correct choice.

Default Reliability...

Both engines are workhorses. The 1.8T has a gaggle of plumbing associated with the turbo. Most of it is fairly cheap, but issues can arise that require a bit of detective work. Thankfully, ross-tech.com has come out with something that really helps the average home mechanic deal with maintaining these cars.

The 2.8 seems prone to oil leaks. Some you can live with, most not particularly inexpensive to fix.

The search function can be used to dig up loads of information. The questions you asked are somewhat common.

Default If not modding 2.8 is the way to go

The 2.8 is a very smooth engine. Its not a race car, but as a daily driver i've never been in a situation where I wished it had more power.

Default my views

12v V6 is not for the tuning unless you are me or one of those people like me that enjoy doing things differently just because. Tuning this engine requires actual hard work. When tuned hard this engine makes plenty of power, but nobody knows how to tune it with exept for a few scattered crazed individuals, like me. 300hp can be realized by N/A tuning its just very expensive and very difficult compared to the other engines available.

30v V6 is easily supercharged and is capable of being as powerful as a S4 or well tuned 1.8T

1.8T is easy to tune to a certain point 300hp or there abouts.
