Default Throttle Body Fault Codes on 1999.5 2.8L Tiptronic

If you want the whole story, it can be found here: https://forums.audiworld.com/pacificnw/msgs/121194.phtml

Here are the fault codes I am getting:

3 Faults Found:

18010 - Power Supply Terminal 30: Voltage too Low

P1602 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

17967 - Throttle Body (J338): Fault in basic settings

P1559 - 35-00 - -

17953 - Throttle Valve Controller: Malfunction

P1545 - 35-00 - -

Readiness: 0010 1101

Power supply low is obviously when I swapped batteries. We cleared the codes and the only one that keeps popping back up is:

17967 - Throttle Body (J338): Fault in basic settings

P1559 - 35-00 - -

The instant you clear the code, that one pops right back up.

Symptoms:
Whether in park or neutral the car is unresponsive in revs and will enter into a loop when it reaches 2,000rpm and will immediately drop back to 1,500rpm. If you give it a lot of gas, it will go to about 3,000rpm before dropping to 2,000 and then back to 1,500.

We tried doing a TBA both with only the key and with the VAGCOM but neither worked; the first didn't do anything at all and the second returned saying it had an "error" (that's as much information as it gave).

It's obviously the TB but the question remains... what do I do now?

Peek inside the throttle body. If it's dirty, it might just need a cleaning. If it's clean, it's probably hosed.

A replacement throttle body is pretty expensive, but at least it's easy to install.

The tightening torque on the mounting bolts is 85 inch pounds, don't forget to replace your gasket.

Anyone have a link to a good TB replacement write up? I don't want to take a chance at messing up.

Ignore my other post about the 85 inch pounds. That's for the 1.8T. I don't know what the correct torque is for the 2.8, but it's probably not that tight.

I've never done the TB on a 2.8, so I can't offer any advice other than "It was pretty easy on a 1.8, I can't imagine the 2.8 being significantly more difficult."

The TB in the 2.8 is in the rear of the engine, which I believe that the ones for the 1.8 are in the front.

All I really need is a list of tools I'll likely need, the rest of it I can more or less piece together myself.

Default The thing is...

...that I have to borrow most of these tools from my father, so if I forget a socket or something I'll have to drive 20min one-way to get the proper tool.

Not owning the right tool to complete a given job is part of the allure of owning an Audi. That's why they use seventeen different kinds of fasteners for every component on the car. Just in case you have the 18mm socket, and the set of Allen bit sockets, and the extra long ball end Allen bit sockets, and the extra long ball end cherry-flavored Allen bit sockets, they're going to throw the need for a 14mm crowfoot (WARNING: MUST BE NONCONDUCTIVE!) or the VAG1253-D Subframe Fuse Spiraling Implement. That's how they work.

Oh, and you're going to need one more universal joint than you own, even if you own a billion of them.
