Default Thule Rack Installation

OK, I just installed the thule system, the footings, the bars, the fairing, and the 525 Standard Upright Bike Rack. A couple points. A) This was a pain in the ***. Well worth it, no doubt, but it took me about two hours to do it. B)Very good bike system- I really like how it easy it is to load the bike on, no removing the wheel. C) Also, does anyone have any advice on installing the fairing (wind deflector)? I did that, but it seems a little unstable- how should it look? I would appreciate pictures. Thanks. Oh yeah, I tend to hear a creaking sound coming from the rack when I do a sharp turn- I think it's just when the bike's on- is that just the bike?
<A HREF="http://www.stoneleigh-manor.com/True/true.html>

Default Thule

Hi, I have the Thule fairing along with the velo vise bike rack and snowboarding racks, I did not use the white arrows for placement of the bars b/c they were to close, but i actually just moved them yesterday so the fairing was closer to the front windshield and it makes a big difference a lot more quieter i believe although i have to try it later with the sunroof open and see how loud it is, but i would suggest getting the fairing...hope i helped, i will post some pictures had some trouble but i will try

Default A few answers...

The first install is the most time consuming; it's pretty quick after intial setup. Also, the creaking is probably from the bike carrier. I used to use the upright carriers, but they wear out at the pivot for the arm that holds the bike frame and the bikes sway a bit. I switched to the fork mount trays. BTW - Rocky Mounts trays are cheaper than the Thule ones. You can purchase them at Colorado Cyclist (see link). HTH.

Default Two pics (sorry if they're a bit big)...

This is an older pics, but I haven't changed anything with the rack. It is resting at the very top edge of the windshield, I didn't want it touching the paint. Its coverage doesn't extend above my crossbars however it has helped to considerably reduce the howling I had without it.
Andrew

Default Thule experience...

I used to work in a bike shop that sold Thules. I've got one myself for bikes and skis. The creaking you hear is probably the bike mount moving slightly on the load bar. Mine does that, too, but I have the Velo Vise attachment. I have to take off the front wheel, so it's different than yours. The fairing should be parallel with the windshield. The rubber strip at the bottom of the fairing should be touching the highest point of the glass. It took me a few tries to get the fairing just right. Even bent the metal brackets just a little to get the angle just right. Pretty cool about the little white arrows on the door seal, huh? Feel free to email me with any questions.
Pat

Default Faring

I strongly recommend that you place the rubber gasket of the faring ON your windshield. It will vibrate with wind and trapped dirt will rub away at the paint on your roof.

Don't worry about install. It took me and a professional installer 1 hour to do it the first time and now it goes on in about 5 minutes....
