Default Ticking sound in the engine bay

I ahev a ticking sound in the engine bay on a 99 1.8TQM. It increases in speed and gets louder as the rpm's rise and seems to be located on the right side, middle to back of the engine block when I face it. Please tell me this could be something other than a valve problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Default lifter chatter maybe? what weight oil are you using? synthetic or dino?

I had a slight case of lifter chatter when I was running mobil 1 5-w30 synthetic, it went away when i switched to 10-W30 synthetic. not sure if thats the case for you though.

Default tow guy tonight suggested some oil additive to get rid of the sound or use heavier oil...

which has been suggested on here before.. wasn't too sure about the additive, although for under $10 it doesn't hurt to try. after i replaced my timing belt it sounds like my ticking got way louder. i also had this problem on my last car which never went away and was told that i needed to have my valves adjusted.. i'll take it to a mechanic if the sound doesn't go away after an oil change.

Default "after i replaced my timing belt it sounds like my ticking got way louder"..................

Are you sure you the sprockets didn't move?

I have a slight ticking noise that fades in and out from time to time, but usually upon startup. I just did the TB and no change.

Default sprokets didn't move at all, my vw friend also says the same that sport said earlier

i probably didn't notice it as much since after the timing belt i've been driving with my window down to catch any weird sounds

Default definitely sounds like lifter tap to me...

i had the same thing, esp when the engine is warm and its hot out. step up ur oil grade a notch or 2, that will help. i went from the reccomended 5/30 up to 15/50 synthetic (in the summer), and havent had it happen since. its not necessarily a BAD thing, but its certainly not good.
