What engine code do you have? -and start you response in the subject line!...
If you have an ATW which is the engine in the '00 your ECU should end with 018Q if it is a tiptronic or 018P if it is a manual trans. These ECU's from personal experience are not interchangable.
ECU's from different years should also not work with the ATW engine.
If you are outside the US your engine codes and model years may differ than ours.

gotcha... and ya, means NOTHING! lol... hell when i had my B5 and my MTM>
chipped ECU the CEL was disabled... even when a coil pack hit the dust i woundlt get a CEL. lol
