Default is it a '96/'97?

For what you paid for it, I'm guessing it's the 12v motor. you should be fine waiting till 90k to do the timing belt (I did at least and ran into no problems) The 1.8T fellas are the ones running into more issues with the TB's breaking prematurely than the V6 guys. I also never flushed the radiator or trans fluid or the fuel filter... but that's on the books for later. I did do oil though =P

As for synthetic oil, I was told that's not the best idea (by my mechanic)... but a lot of people have done it with no ill affects... so you probably won't have a problem.

Default I just did mine...

I got the ECS ultimate timing belt kit (Timing belt ,Idler roller, Tensioner Roller, Water Pump, Thermostat, Accessory drive belt)
My '99 A4 had 100K on it and I wasn't sure if it was done before. The belt looked OK but the water pump started to leak and make noise a few weeks ago. The tensioner roller was also bad.
While I was in there, I also replaced the cam seals, tensioner seals and valve cover gaskets. I still need to replace my snub mount. (I found out it was bad).
Buy the entire kit, cause if you are in there to replace the T-belt, you should replace the rest. + ECS has good prices for quality parts. I paid about 250 for the kit.

Click for ECS website.
