Eat rice and live in the dark; do what you need to, but fix the car....or wait a few weeks and I'll buy it from you.

i know $ is tight, but it's either pay $600-800 now or play russian roulette and then get pegged unexpectedly with a few thousand $ bill and be out of a car.
b5's are high-maintenance, euro-cars (parts $$$) and definitely isn't for those on an extremely tight budget.
things need to be replaced at regular intervals (like tb, water pump, ctrl arms, etc) and things that aren't expected and it all adds up to $$$. they are fun to drive when they are running.
i was warned as an intern, not to buy my b5 (going from integra where all you had to do was put gas, and change the oil). i choose not to listen and i have spent way too much $$$ on the car since. financially, worst decision i've ever made.
luckily, $ wasn't that tight, but if it is was, i'd be on the street now.
good luck and borrow the $ if you have to b/c the last thing you will need/want is being stranded and stuck with big $$$ repair bill.
just my 2 cents.

I drive the 2000 A4 (141k miles) and and the Coupe (201k miles) regularly. The Miata (80k miles) is for sun and for the track. The 'burban (135k miles) hauls the Miata to the track. The Nissan (130k miles) is a garbage hauler and a plow truck. The A6 (208k miles) belongs to my wife. The two 1.8t A4's will be sold soon. The variety is nice, but it can be challenging keeping a fleet of high mileage cars on the road.
