Timing belt - conflicting information

Greetings,
I have a 2000 1.8T. The manual says that the timing belt should be replaced at 105K miles. The service person at the dealership says it should be replaced at 90K miles. People on this forum seem to replace it at 60-75K miles.
Which is correct? Does it depend on the model year?

Older cars, <98.5 had tensioner problems, that caused the belt to slip. Newer models have the updated tensioner which does not appear to have that problem. Although it's always safe to say "It won't hurt to change it early", it's an expensive job.
Cars using the newer tensioner are safe to go the full 90k before replacement. I believe the 90k figure was the "safe" play for the newer tensioner, while the 60k was the 'safe' play for the older tensioner.

. . . unless you have $3000-$4000 sitting around for possible repairs. Find an independant Audi/VW shop that will do the install . . . then order the parts from Clair Parts or germanautoparts.com. Parts + Labor should run you around $500 . . . much easier to swallow than $3000-$4000!
