Default timing belt question

if my timing belt broke or jumped of track i would be able to see it right, cause this mechanic told me my timing belt broke and i checked it today and it looked perfectly fine

Default you have to take the engine apart to see it...

car would be dead as a doornail if the timing belt broke and most likely you'd be looking at several thousand dollars to rebuild the engine since the A4's are an interference design.

Default Uhhhh...

I'd think if your timing belt broke you'd be pretty aware of it.

Default never had the experience on my audi - however

when the timing belt broke on my 81 Mercury capri the car coasted to a stop. If I remember right the starter would try and turn the engine over but nothing would happen. Now that was a clearance design so it was just a matter of a couple hundred bucks for a new timing belt install. When the A4's belt breaks or skips the timing of the valves messes up and you end up having the pistons and valves colliding, which is a real mess) A buddy of mine lost his TB on a 96 A4 and it cost him $4k to get it rebuilt.

Default Timing belt is overrated

Mine broke long ago, you don't need it...just a piece of rubber. Re-attach w/duct tape if you want...

Default My guess it the engine would not turn over because...

a piston would jamb up against an open valve.

On my '99.5 AEB motor, there are two snap clips that hold the top TB cover to the motor. Very easy to pop off and see if the belt is indeed busted.

Default I'm hoping soon

I'm at 63k miles so I have to do the timing belt. I would like to get a set of wheels, suspension, and exhaust in that order. Just spent $1,200 on 60k service, cam shaft tensioner seal, wheel bearing, and alignment so I'm holding off on buying mods for the next few months. My buddy tracks his VW Passat & has been getting me thinking about doing some mods. I plan on keeping this car till I run it into the ground so I'll do some stuff with it.

I love this car's color. I never see any around.
