im planing on changing the timing belt myself. i have a couple questions. im going to mark the sprockets and gears, obviously. my question is, while the belt is off and one of the sprockets/gears turn, will it matter??? obviously, im going to alignt the gears back when putting the new belt on. will it harm anything if the gears turn while the belt is off??? how hard is it?? 1 being a boost guage install.
thanx

if you are competent with a wrench. maybe a 7 or so? i dont think they gears will move, but if you are going to realign it it shouldnt matter. good luck man. read all the writeups and you should be fine

I've done several timing belt installs and I'd agree with Chip that its about a 7 on the difficulty scale. Very time consuming which makes it more of a pain in the *** than actually difficult. good luck

that you must line up. If these marks are not lined up, you will most likely bend your valves when you start it again.
there are groves on the cam gears that must be lined up with the grooves on the head. the second thing you must line up is on the back side of the block, this spot is harder to find. it would be good to have someone there to help you out at that point.

are you at least mechanically inclined? Andy_TN's write up is pretty good for even the not "car inclined"
Also, dont be afraid to spin the secondary shaft. Its the sprocket in the middle of the block. You don't need to line it up with anything. Its actually difficult to "accidentally" move the crank or cams. The crank fights compression and the cam has a ton of springs pushing on it you need to fight

As long as you're at TDC you've got a little wiggle room. If it moves a few teeth either way while you're jockeying the belt around, it's fine. Just make SURE the marks are lined up again once you've got the belt on. When I say lined up, I mean exactly lined up. If you miss it by a tooth either way, your engine will run like crap or not at all.
Cheers,
