if you've never done a TB before, the 1.8T is not a good one to learn on. A number of gotchas...

Default Just did mine at 60,300. Couple words...

Buy the OEM water pump gasket (metal and rubber) and make sure you have a lot of patience and remember the order of parts, screws, and such. Also, I'd change the front engine mount to the APR or AWE mounts if you are into those things.

Default I tried that but without removing the bumper......

how can you take the upper timing belt cover totally apart to get to where the tensioner is? I got the clips out but i can't pull the cover back enough without breaking it.

Any tricks?

Pop the clips and it slides straight up...then peek down with a flashlight.

Default Where's this silliness about the gasket coming from?

The paper gasket works just fine. I've probably changed 50 water pumps and haven't seen any rash of "gasket leaks" with paper/fiber filters over metal/rubber ones. The key is to torque the bolts properly, make sure the mating surfaces are CLEAN, and take your time so you don't kink the gasket.

Cheers,

Default First off, I don't think it's silliness..

The gasket that comes with the ECS kit is all rubber. While I think it would do the job just as right, it doesn't hurt to get an OEM rubber-metal gasket. I agree that properly sanding the old pieces of gasket off and properly crisscrossing the torquing of the bolts is very important, but it won't kill you to order the OEM gasket just to be on the sure side.

Default they are both just as likely to leak if you don't do the job correctly...

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using an aftermarket gasket. There is absolutely no reason to go to the trouble of getting the metal gasket...none whatsoever. There is no basis in fact for even recommending it so why do it unless it's just a superstition thing...

Cheers,
