Default Timing Belt Recall

1997 A4 80,000 miles. Received the timing belt recall notice couple of weeks ago and â€" what a coincidence â€" three days later the timing belt snaps. The engine needs to be replaced , estimated repair cost - $7K (I wonder how they detect the amount of damage without opening the engine). Dealer says recall does not apply because they do not have all maintenance records (I did not use them for regular maintenance work).
Any advice is appreciated. TIA.

Default most timing belt failure does not require a new engine

they should have pulled the head to check for piston damage.

What's the recall about, defective belts? I just changed mine. Details, please? Thanks.

Default 60k user ID and you what, are just now learning how to post?

maybe if you had spent a lil bit of time on AW you would have realized you got 20,000 miles of borrowed time out of that engine. As far as I'm concerned it was too little too late for you. Now you've gotta pay the band, it sucks for you... but you put you there imo.

Default audi pays a technician 1.5 hours to check the belt

and tell you that you are due for service. Then when you decline the service for $1.2k or so, their hands are washed and its all on you.

plus time is a factor as well - that's an 8 year old belt/tensioner.

Default oh and if for some reason you dont need the service

like any tech would turn down an 8 hour TB job... yeah right.

but if you dont... then you need to have it checked again at 80k miles if you are just having it checked at 40k...

realistically tho... we have sold a couple of TB jobs this past week on AEB's due to this letter.

Default didn't this whole "recall" come about as a result of a class action?

I'd find that group and register your complaint with them. There IS NO WAY to inspect a timing belt. It's either intact or it isn't. Audi is just continuing to shaft all of us on this.

It does make me wonder if all of you are asleep though. I found out about the timing belt the first time I was ever on this forum three years ago. Changed the belt a week later at 76K.
