Default Timing belt replacement

My brother just took his car into the dealership, and said he wanted his timing belt replaced. The service manager said that audi doesn't recommend it until 105,000. (he has 60,000). What do you think he should do wait a little longer or replace it now. I know a couple of guys on here have had it tear on them at around this mileage. Any input would be great. Thanks

Default It's not so much the belt that's the problem...

...as it is the timing belt tensioner. The belt HAS broken/slipped teeth in some cases, but the more prevalent problem is that the tensioner fails. I would say don't wait, have it done now and make SURE that they use the updated timing belt tensioner. Good luck

Default Have him ask the dealer if they (or Audi) will pay for the damage in the event of a premature failur

e. If they say no, then change the belt. If they said yes, get it in writing.

Default Dude, get it changed. I just did mine a few weeks ago.

Its not cheap to do, but it is sure less expensive than having an engine rebuilt. My dealer charged me $800 for timing belt, water pump, tensioner, and thermostat. If you are handy with tools you can do it yourself. There is a great write up in the tech section. Good luck.

Default Do it Now!

My manual said to replace it at 75K. Dealer said since I bought the car Audi changed it (in my model year) to 90K. Well, 82K miles, and $4K down the drain I WISH I had changed it back when it was still under warranty.

So, unless you got lots of money burning a hole in your pocket, get it changed pronto.

Of course, YMMV...but I wouldn't want that belt to brake in rush hour traffic on the interstate...
