Default Timing belt tensioner

I'm having the timing belt replaced on my 97 A4 quattro 2.8 12v with 130,000mi. I don't have maintenance history so I don't know if its ever been done however its obvious the car has been well maintained. I ordered the ultimate timing belt kit from ECS thinking the tensioner would be included. When I ordered it I called and asked about a part on the web page called the dampener and they said I didn't need to change that because those rarely wear out. Now I can see that the ECS dampener is the tensioner. Shouldn't this be replaced with the timing belt on a 2.8 12v? Why would ECS recommend not to replace it?

Default Do you have the timing belt kit with you now?

The Ultimate kit should consist of the following:

Timing belt, Idler roller, Tensioner Roller, Water Pump, Thermostat, Accessory drive belt.

Default I think you might be confused.

The 1.8t has a piston type thing (dampener) that tensions the belt via the tensioner roller. The 12v has just a tensioner roller, no dampener.

BTW, do not do this job without the timing belt tools. It is impossible to correctly set valve timing without them.

Yes. That's what came with the kit. I've read so many posts saying to replace the tensioner that I assumed it applied to the 2.8 12v as well.

Default Skip buying parts from ECS

clearly they don't know the product... so why buy from them? If they don't know what the car needs then how do you know what they sent you was right?

I'd return the parts and order from somebody with a clue.

Definitely confused. Should I have the cam and crank seals replaced as well? My mechanic says he's worked on a lot of Audis and he's done a good job so far but I doubt he has the timing belt tools. I'll ask, but can it be done without them?
