I guess I should have stated that the post was aimed at the V6 crowd.

Default always use the cam bar

I had to fabricate one when I did my 12v. What a joy that was... however upon checking it with the shop tool the next day it was correct.

Default Yeah, we no longer have to fabricate tools

Fabricating parts is another story.

Default As the qfrog stated below, you have to use the cam bar

However, the crank lock tool isn't really necessary if you know what you're doing.

Default Yes and no.

The crank tool makes it easier. I don't know about the guys in your shop, but everyone I know doesn't bother removing all the 8 mm bolts, we just remove the center bolt and pull the cam sprocket and the pulley as a unit. Saves time, and you need to pull the big bolt to change the crank seal anyway.

Default Ah, ok

I don't pull that unless the seal is leaking, and that is one reason to actually use the crank lock tool. Also it should be known that if that crank bolt is removed it needs to be replaced as it is a torque-to-yield bolt. I had to do one once and they had to special order the bolt....none of the local dealers carried it!
