tips on accelerating more quickly?
Hi guys..
As some of you know (from my previous posts) I am sort of new to stick and driving around a 98 A4 1.8T. Anyway, I went on a small road trip this weekend and noticed that I am not very good at accelerating quickly. At lights it isn't a problem, but when mergin on the highway, I need to practice a little. Any tips on how to go from 0 to 60 more quickly? I think the problem is that I am too nervous to rev the engine on my new baby (just ogt a car a month ago). How long should I be in each gear?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Oh, and one more question.. What speeds should I put the car in 5th? I usually put it in there around 50, but 4th is still below 3000rpms at that point.
Thanks guys,
Marcus

Yeah, you're shifting too early...
I shift at 3500 to 4000 in every gear if driving casually, and 5000 to 5500 if I'm
driving agressively or need to merge or get ahead of traffic. This car loves to
rev. It has a rev limiter to keep you from doing much damage, bouncing off it
a couple times to get a feel for where it lurks isn't going to blow anything up.
BTW, I put 120,000 trouble free miles on a Honda 4pot using the exact same
shifting method (if anything a little higher, since the power band and torque of
the Audi doesn't live so high in the rev range).

Re: what gear should I rev it up the most in? 2nd?
Be careful in first and if your car is new and your the cautious type second as well. Third and fourth gears are your money gears use them as you see fit.
truth 00' 2.8 Avant

I agree with Truth, Get out of 1st and 2nd earlier than 3rd and 4th...
You have more of a possibility of banging the limiter 'cause the revs climb so
quick in the lowest gears, you have more time to let it run in the mid gears.
Running up to 5000 in 4th while getting on the freeway should have you doing
well over 80. I don't put it in 5th until I'm actually up to the speed I want to
cruise at.

Exactly. Jason H...
These cars are not big honkin muscle cars to be spun off the line get out of 1st as fast as possible, hold second a bit longer so that when you get into third your at the bottom of the power band of 3rd (3500rpm). This is the fastest and safest way to run these engines. 5th gear is basically overdrive. Use it after you've reached your cruising speed to lower your rpm's and conserve fuel unless your a 2.8 like me and then go ahead and use it for casual passing as well.
truth 00' 2.8 Avant
